Call for General Editor of RPM

Position Announcement: The Portuguese Society for Music Research (SPIM), the Institute of Ethnomusicology – Center for Studies in Music and Dance (INET-md), and the Center for Music Studies (CESEM) are seeking applicants for a position as General Editor of the online journal Revista Portuguesa de Musicologia (RPM, 2.ª série) / Portuguese Journal of Musicology (RPM, 2nd Series).

Journal description: RPM is a double-blind peer-reviewed open-access journal open to all areas of music research, welcoming submissions in such diverse domains as historical musicology, ethnomusicology, music analysis and technology, research in music performance and creation, sociology and psychology of music, sound and popular music studies, among others. Inter- and multidisciplinary humanistic and technological perspectives on music and sound are very well appreciated and promoted. RPM is published online twice a year and includes thematic dossiers and major research articles as well as reviews of books, recordings and other media. Portuguese and English are the primary languages, but articles in Spanish, French and Italian are also welcome. RPM editorial team is composed by a Board of Directors constituted by three members representing the above-mentioned promoters of the journal, namely José Oliveira Martins (SPIM), Manuel Deniz Silva (INET-MD) and Luísa Cymbron (CESEM); the General Editor(s); the Reviews Editors; the Editorial Assistant and the Advisory Board, constituted by scholars and artists from a wide range of geographies and areas in music research. The RPM new series is indexed in RILM, ERIH PLUS, LATINDEX, and DIALNET.

Position requirements and conditions: The appointment of General Editor (GE) of RPM is a non-paid position that requires a commitment of three years. We seek to constitute a qualified and complementary team of General Editors, expected to work collaboratively. Additionally, the GE team will report and work closely with the Board of Directors, as well as supervise the work of the remaining editorial staff. The GE is expected to have excellent command of both Portuguese and English, have a significant scientific curriculum, demonstrating a close connection with the music research community. Specifically, the General Editor position(s) will be responsible to:

  • Evaluate initial submissions and determine if they should move forward to the process of peer review;
  • Assign pertinent submissions to peer review of at least two reviewers, keeping submissions available for general oversight of the Board of Directors;
  • Edit research articles accepted for publication;
  • Oversee the review process;
  • Identify, attract and appoint Review Editors and coordinate their work;
  • Submit a work report once a year to the Board of Directors;
  • Present the editorial work to SPIM´s General Assembly once a year;
  • Coordinate and oversee the work of the Editorial Assistant;
  • Actively pursue the ongoing process of the journal’s integration in the main scientific databases.

Application procedures and dates: Interested applicants should submit a statement of intentions which describes previous editorial and/or administrative experience, and main motivations and vision for serving as RPM’s editor. In addition, applicants should also submit a curriculum vitae, two samples of written research, and indicate two references that support the application. The Board of Directors of RPM will review applications, reserving the right to appoint a team of co-editors.
