CALL FOR PROPOSALS

The Portuguese Society for Music Research invites submissions for EnIM 25 | 14th Research Meeting in Music, which will take place at the School of Arts, University of Évora, from 27 to 29 October 2025. This year, EnIM joins the commemorations of the 70th anniversary of the death of Luís de Freitas Branco, organised by the University of Évora.

EnIM will feature keynote speakers:

  • Carlos Caires
  • Rui Vieira Nery

Luís de Freitas Branco stood out as a multifaceted figure in Portuguese musical culture, whose work and thought encompass multiple dimensions relevant to music research. The diversity of his contributions resonates with the spirit of EnIM, which fosters dialogue across different scientific fields. In this context, the commemoration of the anniversary of Luís de Freitas Branco offers an opportunity to strengthen the connection between his legacy and the scientific aims of EnIM.

The 14th Research Meeting in Music remains a space for multi- and interdisciplinary exchange. Therefore, in addition to proposals related to the work of Luís de Freitas Branco, SPIM welcomes original submissions for oral presentation on all topics and issues relevant to research in music and sound. Submissions should consider their potential interest to SPIM’s multidisciplinary community and adopt one of the following formats: (1) individual or collaborative papers; (2) themed panels; (3) lecture-performances; or (4) workshops. All proposals must be submitted via the CMT platform.

All doctoral and master’s students whose paper proposals are accepted for EnIM will be eligible to apply for the Joaquim de Vasconcelos Prize 2026. Only candidates who attend the meeting and deliver their presentation will be considered eligible. The winner of the 2025 prize will be announced during EnIM.

Proposals must be submitted by 30 June 2025 July 6, 2025, following the formats outlined below:

Paper presentation (individual/collaborative): 300–400 words and 3 to 5 keywords. Presentations must not exceed 20 minutes and will be followed by 10 minutes of discussion. Proposals should present original and current research on any topic within SPIM’s scope, clearly stating the context, research questions, objectives, description of results, and scholarly relevance.

Panel: The panel overview should be 300–400 words with 5 keywords, followed by individual paper abstracts of 300–400 words each and 3 to 5 keywords. Panels should include three to four speakers and must not exceed 1.5 hours in total, including discussion time. Proposals should present original and current research on any topic within SPIM’s scope, clearly stating the context, research questions, objectives, description of results, and scholarly relevance.

Lecture-performance: 300–400 words and 3 to 5 keywords. Lecture-performances should not be conceived as a theoretical presentation followed by a separate performance; instead, both components should be interwoven, aiming for formats that highlight the interdependence of reflection and performance practice. Presentations must not exceed 20 minutes and will be followed by 10 minutes of discussion. The availability of musical instruments must be ensured by the proposers.

Workshop: 300–400 words and 3 to 5 keywords. Workshops may include multiple tutors and must not exceed 2.5 hours. Priority will be given to proposals in disruptive areas, ideally aligned with emerging research lines. Proposals should clearly state the context, objectives, structure, target audience, and scholarly relevance, as well as a minimum and maximum number of participants. Any materials required to support the workshop must be specified in the proposal and are subject to feasibility as determined by the organisers.
